Reuters: Japan says armed Chinese vessel enters Japan waters

A Chinese coastguard vessel with what appeared to be gun turrets entered territorial waters claimed by Japan in the East China Sea, Japan's coastguard said on Saturday, adding that it was the first such incursion by an armed Chinese vessel in the disputed area.

The vessel was one of three that appeared in the waters off the disputed Senkaku Islands, known in China as the Diaoyus, shortly after 9:30 a.m. (0030 GMT) and left Japanese-claimed waters about 70 minutes later, a Japan coastguard spokeswoman said.

The vessel had first been sighted in the area on Tuesday afternoon and was sailing 29 km (18 miles) off one of the contested islands as of 9:00 a.m. (0000 GMT) on Wednesday, according to Japan's coastguard.

At that time, China said its vessels were carrying standard equipment and doing nothing wrong in Chinese waters.

And guess who they are accusing of setting him free? The police!

Two months after Saturday Punch reported that a 37-year-old mechanic, Thompson, sexually abused his daughter till she lost her voice, the victim's mother has raised the alarm that the authorities had released the man without prosecution.

Thirty-two-year-old Funmi told Saturday Punch that she and her children had been living in fear of what Thompson might do to them for causing his woes.

Thompson was arrested after Saturday Punch reported the bizzare case in October when Funmi alleged that her husband had on many occasions raped their four-year-old daughter, Rebecca, in their home in Igando area of Lagos.


She alleged that apart from having sexual intercourse with the little girl on several occasions, she had caught her husband inserting his finger into the private part of the girl more than once, all of which had traumatised Rebecca to the point where she could no longer talk.

For reporting the case, Funmi and her children were allegedly threatened by her husband, forcing her to move out of his house.

Funmi said, "With all that he did, I thought he would face the law. I thought he would be prosecuted for the abominations he had committed.

"Now, I look over my shoulder anytime I walk on the street. I always tell my children to be careful too. Who knows what he is planning against us?

"I fear for my life and that of my children now. After he was released, he went to the school of my children and attempted to take them from there, but the teacher did not release them to him. I did not even know he was released until they told me he visited the school."

She said Rebecca is gradually regaining her voice.

Funmi, who alleged that her separated husband was diabolical, had explained that the sexual abuse of their daughter started when the girl was two years old.

She began, "It started in 2013 when I suddenly woke up one night and saw my husband removing the panties of my daughter. It was in the midnight. I wanted to shout but I wanted to see what he was up to. So, I acted like I didn't see him because the room was relatively dark.

"When he pulled down her panties, he looked around and when he felt convinced that everyone was deep asleep, he stood up and moved to where the girl was and dipped his hand in her private part. I screamed."

The case was reported to the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender, where a lawyer was assigned to handle the case.

"I was surprised that he has been released. Nobody told me anything," Funmi said.

She told Punch correspondent that efforts to get an explanation from the lawyer assigned to her case has been abortive.

Director of the Esther Child Rights Foundation, Esther Ogwu, who reported the case to the OPD, explained that the case might have been destroyed by the police when it was transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation in the state.

She said, "I can say with confidence that the problem could not have come from the OPD because they don't waste time in handling terrible cases like this.

"The police were the ones who released him without prosecution. They even called the woman a liar for reporting that her husband raped his own daughter when she was invited to come and give her statement.

"It is unfortunate the woman is no longer safe now. She told us that she now runs from one place to another in fear of her husband. I feel sad when things like these happen in our country and the culprits go scot-free."


When Punch correspondent contacted the spokesperson for the OPD, Mr. Adeoba Adeniji-Adele, he said he would need to make findings about the status of the case before giving the agency's official comment on the case.

John McAfee had previously announced and filed his paperwork back in September to run for President under a brand new party that he was going to be starting called the "Cyber Party". Now, according to USA Today's Jon Swartz via a phone interview on December 25, McAfee said he will be joining the Libertarian Party and jumping into the race for their party's nomination.
Although there are already 10 declared candidates plus Jesse Ventura and Gary Johnson still contemplating jumping in, McAfee seemed to be confident that he can win the Libertarian Party's nomination. Considering the 10 candidates currently in the race, McAfee said laughing,
"They have 10 candidates running, none of whom have personality."

The Federal Government has concluded the review of a national drug policy that will in turn lead to the complete shutting down of the open drug markets in the country by year 2017 to check the menace of fake drugs.

The Registrar/Chief Executive, Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria, Mr. Elijah Mohammed, stated this in an interview with Saturday Punch, on the sidelines of his end of year media chat with journalists in Abuja. He said the review was carried through the Federal Ministry of Health.

He also announced the withdrawal of the practicing licences of three certified pharmacists and said over 30 members are being investigated over alleged breach of professional code of conduct. Continue...

"The checklist for Patent and Proprietary Medicine Shops and Coordinated Wholesales Centres have been well established and quality control mechanisms have been put in place.

"Those in the open market are definitely going to be relocated, a two-year period term has been put in place for construction of such facilities that will house PCN, NAFDAC, the police and other related organisations and once those facilities are put in place, definitely the open drug market will be closed down and we have discussed this with stakeholders and they have all agreed on the timeframe.


"Let me assure Nigerians that in two years' time, the idea of open drug market would be a thing of the past. When they are relocated to the CWC, they will be highly regulated and any product coming in must be certified by the PCN. So wherever there are open drugs will be shut down, because that is the bedrock of most of the fake drugs we have in this country," Elijah Mohammed said.

As throngs of people celebrated Christmas at the National Theatre,Iganmu,Lagos ,Suspected hoodlums on Friday invaded the premises,disrupting the peace of fun seekers .
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN),many people who had come to the premises to spend the Christmas day lost their valuables during the incident which occurred between 4.30 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The venue suddenly became chaotic as members of the public, who had come for relaxation and sightseeing took to their heels following the activities of the suspected hoodlums. But the Police at the National Theatre Post eventually apprehended some of the suspected hoodlums.

Mr Philip Patrick, a 19-year-old student, told NAN that he just saw people running all over the premises of the theatre.
"I came here with my siblings to spend the Christmas day. "We were having a picnic sort of, and all of a sudden, we saw people running in different directions; we also saw a `danfo' bus move speedily around the complex. "No one could really explain exactly what was happening but we had to run for safety first.''
Patrick said that there were many pickpockets around.
"There are also a lot of pickpockets around harassing fun seekers. "One of them took my camera but returned it immediately when I saw his hand coming out from my pocket. "I also saw the same man take items from other people,'' Patrick said.
Mrs Anabel Gbenro, a teacher, said that the incident was terrifying.

"I have come here with my family to give them a tour of a historic place in our country."The next thing we saw was people running to different directions. "It is annoying that hoodlums are roaming everywhere here taking items from innocent people who are trying to relax their nerves. "The security should be tighter; the police should increase their surveillance,'' Gbenro said.
Miss Precious Ukawuike, another fun seeker, said that more should be done to restore the glory of the theatre.
"We cannot even go inside the theater; on a day like this, we cannot go inside to see how it is. "It is sad that a lot of our young generation, especially those living outside Lagos do not know what the National Theatre is. "I also think that people with demeanor which are visibly questionableshould be further scrutinised by security agents to prevent them from harassing harmless citizens,'' Ukawuike said.

The act of giving is subject to the law of harvest; therefore, everyone who gives receives something much more than what was given, because the harvest is usually greater than the seed sown. There are some desires that you may not receive until you give. There are certain great requests that may appear illusive until you give your best seed. For you to be able to receive all your requests, you must first be prepared to pay any price by giving anything God wants you to. What you are prepared to give determines the extent to which God is compelled to give to you in return. Are you ready to pay the ultimate sacrifice? Sacrificial giving never goes unrewarded. After Jesus laid down His life for the sins of the world, He was rewarded with the Name above every other name (Philippians 2:8-11). Similarly, after Abraham demonstrated his love for God, the Lord swore to bless Abraham and his children beyond measure, promising to multiply his generations like the sand on the seashore. What are you doing to prove your love for God today?

Minister of State for Petroleum , Dr Ibe Kachikwu during a tour of the Port Harcourt refinery on Christmas Day said that the Federal government is working to reduce the pump price of petrol to about 85 or 86 naira per litre by Jan 1st.
He said efforts were on to get the refinery to achieve 60 percent production capacity and to supply about 11 million liters of petrol daily.
"If you look at the new PPPRA template that we developed and which I just signed off two days ago, when it is announced you will find out that for now ,and I use the emphatic word of the President for now, the price of the refined product will actually be lower than 87 naira, It will be 85. We will probably announce that in January if the prices hold.
"Like I said, we have done a modulation calculation and it is showing us below N87. I imagine that if PPPRA publishes it today, it will become effective immediately. But the 1st of January that is when we are looking at."
"What that does for you is that its modulating. If it goes up you move up, if it comes down you come down. So we take away the fact of having to go find funds to pay for these subsidies that we cannot afford.
"More importantly we try to be as close to the pump price that we have now as possible," he said.

Sri Lankan maid who was sentenced to be stoned in an adultery case in Saudi Arabia has been spared from this mode of horrific death sentence. Instead the convict has been sentenced to three year jail time after several appeals made by the Sri Lankan government.

Harsha De Silva, Sri Lankan acting foreign minister said in a statement," The government of Sri Lanka is very happy to announce that the appeal for clemency on the sentence was successful and the sri Lankan national will have to serve a reduced term in prison".
 
The 45-year-old married woman who served as a domestic helper in Riyadh since 2013 was accused of adultery with another fellow Sri Lankan migrant worker and sentenced to a harsh punishment of stoning to death while the accomplice was given a lesser punishment of 100 lashes only as he was not married. Though there were no immediate comments from Saudi Arabia on the clemency reports and the announcement made by Sri Lankan authorities.
