Reuters: Saudi Arabia intercepts ballistic missile from Yemen: state news

Saudi Arabia said it intercepted a Scud ballistic missile fired from Yemen on Saturday, according to a statement on the Saudi state news agency SPA, an attack which threatens a fragile ceasefire ahead of renewed U.N.-backed peace talks next month.

"Saudi Air Defense Forces intercepted at about 11 P.M. (2000 GMT) yesterday a Scud missile launched from Sanaa, in Yemeni territory, toward the city of Najran ... the air force immediately destroyed the rocket launch platform," the Saudi statement said.

Yemen's state news agency said the target was a Saudi national guard base.

Al Jazeera: Afghanistan army suffers losses in Helmand

Fighting results in deaths of 21 soldiers in Taliban stronghold, where government has lost control over four districts.

Army officials in Afghanistan say 21 soldiers have been killed by the Taliban in Helmand province during the last 48 hours.

Fighting between Afghan soldiers and the Taliban has been particularly heavy around the town of Sangin, which is under Taliban control.

Helmand is a traditional stronghold of the Taliban and a major centre for opium that US and British troops fought for years to control.

The Long War Journal reposted these images, released by ISIS, which it says show Iraqi soldiers being rounded up by the group.

New York Times: Veteran International Prosecutor Foresees War Crimes Trials for ISIS

THE HAGUE — Stephen J. Rapp, a veteran American lawyer and a familiar figure in international courts, was doing what he most favors — talking about war crimes. Not just citing conflicts that demand the world's attention, but also discussing how to pursue top offenders.

For example, now that Islamic State militants are reaching far beyond the territory they control, he was asked on a visit to The Hague, do they become more liable under international law?

"We need strategies for investigating and prosecuting them, going after their leaders in Europe, Syria, Iraq or wherever they strike," Mr. Rapp replied. "It means working with prosecutors in Iraq, Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon to build cases so that they can make arrests in their countries."

WNU Editor: Sadly .... investigators and prosecutors have enough enough evidence in both Iraq and Syria to conduct war crimes trials that will last to the next century. The focus for now is to document the evidence, and hope and pray that this conflict ends sooner rather than later.

Haaretz: Russian Envoy Secretly Visits Israel for Talks on Syria

Alexander Lavrentiev and large Russian delegation meet senior Israeli officials, discussing potential UN-backed diplomatic talks to end Syrian civil war.

Russia's special envoy on Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, visited Israel secretly last Thursday, where he held talks with senior Israeli officials regarding international contacts over a potential diplomatic agreement to end the Syrian civil war.

The UN Security Council passed a resolution a week ago on launching UN-backed negotiations between Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime and members of the opposition and rebel groups. Israel did not object to the resolution publicly. However, there is concern in Jerusalem that an international agreement over Syria will strengthen Iran and Hezbollah.

Long War Journal: Iraqi military retakes center of Ramadi from Islamic State

The Iraqi military, backed by tribal fighters and US airstrikes, regained control of the government center and main neighborhoods in Ramadi from the Islamic State after a week of heavy fighting. Ramadi, the capital of Anbar province, fell to the Islamic State in May after Iraqi forces based there fled their posts.

"The [government] complex is under our complete control, there is no presence whatsoever of Daesh [Islamic State] fighters in the complex," Sabah al Numani, a spokesman for the Iraqi military coalition charged with retaking Ramadi, told Reuters.

The Islamic State has been "defeated in Ramadi" and that "the next step is to clear pockets that could exist here or there in the city," Numani said.

Hassan Hassan, The National: Syria rebel group will survive leader's death

Zahran Alloush, the former leader of Jaish Al Islam who was killed by Russian air strikes on Friday evening near Damascus, was more widely mourned than any other opposition figure since the start of the Syrian conflict. He has also been condemned for having made sectarian statements alluding to the extermination of Shia in Syria.

Sectarian statements are unjustifiable because they stoke tensions in an already polarised landscape. Jaish Al Islam was guilty of playing a cynical game of religious one-upmanship against extremist groups, especially at the height of religious polarisation in late 2013, during the Hizbollah-led offensive inside Syria. But it is a mistake to equate the group with extremist organisations, especially since such statements by no means reflect the group's intentions or actions.

Michael Weiss, Daily Beast: What It's Like to Have Russian Jets Bomb the Crap Out of Your Town

Putin's military says its only going after terrorists in Syria. But the view from Aleppo City is very different. Residents are wondering why their marketplaces are being bombed.

"When I'm sitting here and we hear a plane, which is a lot now, I know from the sound. If the plane is above us—you can tell if it's above you, because that's when it's the loudest—and if it's a Russian plane, then it doesn't attack where we are. It attacks two or three kilometers away."

Rami Jarrah is telling me how he distinguishes which government is now bombing civilians in Syria's Aleppo City. It's a question that used to answer itself—but no more, given the presence of Syrian, Russian, and coalition aircraft in the skies. Syrian jets, he says, once flew so low that you could actually see the pilots in the cockpits; Russian fixed-wing aircraft fly at much higher altitudes such that they look like crosses or plus-signs in the clouds. They fire from far away, the better to evade the bullets of the Dushka (the name means "sweetie" in Russian), a Soviet-era antiaircraft machine gun, which is typically all anti-Assad rebels have to deter helicopters and attack jets, sometimes successfully.

WNU Editor: Civilians are the ones who are experiencing the brunt of this war .... and have been for four years .... but it appears that the Russians are now adding to this misery.

Business Insider: ISIS propaganda expert: The group 'talks about Obama more' than Donald Trump

During the Saturday-night debate on ABC News, Democratic front-runner frontrunner Hillary Clinton claimed that ISIS is showing people videos of Donald Trump "in order to recruit more radical jihadists."

She then dubbed Trump, the Republican presidential frontrunner, "ISIS' best recruiter."

Pundits debated the claim all weekend, and several fact-checkers ruled that there's no evidence to back up Clinton's claim about the terrorist group. And one ISIS propaganda expert told Business Insider that the group actually talks about President Barack Obama more than Trump.

WNU Editor: I have been following the Islamic State since the beginning .... their focus (in their propaganda and news releases) is NOT on Donald Trump. In fact .... I would be surprised if some ISIS fighters have a clue on who Donald Trump is. Their focus is on President Obama ... after-all .... he is the President of the United States. As to what are they discussing when President Obama's name comes up .... we got a glimpse of that this week from Bowe Bergdahl (albeit from the Taliban) .... Bergdahl: Taliban asked me if Obama is gay (New York Post).

Reuters: Austrian police say European capitals have been warned of possible attack

Vienna police said on Saturday a "friendly" intelligence service had warned European capitals of the possibility of a shooting or bomb attack before New Year, prompting police across the continent to increase security measures.

"Several possible names of potential attackers were mentioned, which were checked, and the investigation based on (these checks) has so far yielded no concrete results," Vienna police said in a statement, some six weeks after 130 people were killed in Islamist bombing and shooting attacks in Paris.

"In the days before Christmas a warning was sent out by a friendly (intelligence) service to numerous European capitals, saying that it could come to an attack involving explosives or a shooting between Christmas and the New Year in crowded spaces."

The police asked Austrians for their understanding of the need for more security controls.
