IBTimes: New Year's Eve Banned In Gaza: Hamas Rules Holiday Celebrations 'Incompatible' With Islamic Values

The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas has reportedly banned all New Year's Eve celebrations this year, the Agence France-Presse reported Wednesday. Hotels and restaurants that requested permits to hold public parties Thursday night were denied the right to do so, and the police have vowed to clamp down on unlicensed celebrations.

Hamas leaders determined such celebrations were "incompatible with our customs, traditions, values and the teachings of our religion," police spokesman Ayman al-Batinji told AFP. Parties for the holiday were also seen to contravene with "solidarity with the families of the martyrs of the Jerusalem intifada," he said. The comment referred to turmoil that has spilled across much of the West Bank in recent months.

Fire Engulfs Luxury Hotel In Dubai Amidst New Year’s Celebration

Fire fighters on Thursday night battled a massive blaze that engulfed a luxury hotel in Dubai amidst New Year’s Eve festivities.

According to reports flames engulfed a large section of the high-end Address Hotel soon after the blaze began around 9:30 p.m.

Hours later, dark plumes of smoke billowed from the building, as the fire still appeared to be searing several stories.

The CNN quoted witnesses as saying that they heard explosions, as the fire raged.

Early reports from Dubai authorities said the fire started on the 20th floor of the 63-floor hotel.

Evacuation of people from the area began minutes after the flame was noticed.

The CNN also quoted the Dubai government’s media office as saying that at least 14 people sustained minor injuries from the fire.

Despite the fire outbreak, the highly anticipated New Year’s Eve festivities in the United Arab Emirates’ most populous city went ahead as planned.

Cheering crowds of onlookers watched as bursts of colour filled the sky.

The Address Downtown Dubai hotel near the worlds tallest building ( Burj Khalifa) was gutted by fire this evening. At least 16 people were injured after a huge blaze broke out from the 20th floor of the hotel. This happened hours before New Year's Eve fireworks is supposed to start at the nearby Burj Khalifa. Guests at the hotel have been evacuated and fortunately no life was lost even though the fire spread very quickly.

A witness said it went from just a small fire at the foot of the building, shot up to the middle and the top of the building in five minutes.

Reuters: Before Mosul, Iraqi army may face fight at the gates of Baghdad

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi forces may face a big battle near Baghdad before they can try to retake the Islamic State stronghold of Mosul: Falluja, a long-time bastion of Sunni Muslim jihadists at the capital's western gates.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's government and the U.S.-led coalition backing it have been cagey so far in plans for Falluja, which lies between Baghdad and Ramadi, the capital of western Anbar province that the Iraqi military recaptured this week from the militants.

Falluja was the first Iraqi city to fall to Islamic State in January 2014, six months before the group that emerged from al Qaeda swept through large parts of Iraq and neighboring Syria.Abadi said on Monday the army would head next to Mosul, the biggest urban center under Islamic State control. He said its capture would mark the end of the "caliphate" proclaimed from the northern city's main mosque in June 2014.

WNU Editor: The last time the U.S. and its allies fought for Fallujah (7 November – 23 December 2004) they had 10,500 US soldiers, 850 British soldiers, and 2,000 Iraqi soldiers. When the fight was over .... almost 100 US soldiers were dead, 600 wounded. Rebel losses were between 1,500 and 2,000 (Wikipedia). Bottom line .... if I was a betting man i would say that the fight for Fallujah is probably going to be more bloodier than Ramadi.

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State have kicked against the proposed removal of petrol subsidy by the Federal Government.

Speaking during a one-day conference organised by the Kaduna State PDP Youth Patriotic Front held in Kafanchan, the party leaders including the minority leader of the House of Representatives, Yakaubu Barde, and the Senator representing Southern Kaduna District, Danjuma Laah, wondered why the same All Progressive Congress-led government that opposed the move by former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration to remove petrol subsidy 2011, is planning to do same.

Barde specifically faulted the former Governor of Lagos State and National Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, for his recent call for the removal of petrol subsidy.

He noted that Tinubu’s insistence on President Buhari removing fuel subsidy come January 2016 was quite unfortunate in many respects, and another misadventure of the National Leader of the APC and his party.

According to the PDP leaders, the only reason the issue of fuel subsidy had continued to recur was because Nigeria imports petroleum products for domestic consumption.

They warned that so long as importation continues, the problem that the government sets out to confront would continue like a recurring decimal.

The event was attended by prominent members of the PDP from the Southern Kaduna Senatorial Zone, including former Minister of Aviation, Mr Hassan Hyet, Senator Danjuma Laah, the State PDP Chairman, Mr Abubakar Haruna, former Deputy Speaker of Kaduna State House of Assembly, Dogara Mato, former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Mark Jacob, and many former Commissioners.

FRSC Sets Up Mobile Court In Edo

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has set up a mobile court in Benin City, the Edo State capital to check reckless driving.

Officials of the Commission said this is part of efforts to penalise those who disrespect traffic regulations.

Majority of culprits arrested include those in possession of fake drivers’ licenses.

The Commission has also pledged to create greater awareness for motorists on the need to adhere to traffic regulations especially along highways.

The FRSC had deployed 36, 000 men to Federal roads across Nigeria to ensure adherence to road safety laws and free flow of traffic during the Yuletide.

Abia Election: Ikpeazu Hopeful Of Victory At Supreme Court

The Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, has expressed hopes that the Supreme Court will set aside the judgement of the Court of Appeal that nullified his victory in the April 11 governorship election.

While briefing reporters in Umuahia after the judgement of the appellate court, the Governor expressed confidence in the ability of the Supreme Court to correct what he called the anomaly of the Court of Appeal and uphold his victory.

He said that he had not received the full briefing on the reason for the decision of the Court of Appeal that sat in Owerri, Imo State earlier on Thursday.

The court had upturned his election and ordered that his opponent and governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Alex Otti, be sworn in

But Mr Ikpeazu said preliminary reports at his disposal indicated that the premise on which the ruling was made was hard-hearted.

He said that he had instructed his lawyers to appeal the judgment at the Supreme Court.

According to him, he still remains the Governor of the state until the Supreme Court’s decision.

He was optimistic that the Supreme Court would reaffirm his victory, which he said was duly given to him by the people of Abia Sate.

Mr Ikpeazu urged all his supporters to remain calm while calling on the security to maintain peace and forestall any breakdown of law and order.

Senate Says No Plans To Spend 50bn Naira On Cars

The Nigerian Senate has described as untrue claims that it plans to purchase cars worth 50 billion Naira.

The Senate’s statement is in response to President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement during his maiden media chat on Wednesday that he could not see the ‘National Assembly spending 45 billion Naira to buy cars on top of the transport allowance they collect’.

After the statement, different figures were posted on different platforms, as funds that the National Assembly plans to spend on cars.

“Not In My Time”

In a statement by its spokesperson, Senator Aliyu Abdullahi, the Senate said: “While it was contemplating purchasing cars, it did not intend to spend anything close to the various figures of 4.5 billion Naira, six billion Naira or 50 billion Naira, as being bandied around”.

He further said that shortly after getting the management team and the Senate services committee to commence the due process for the purchase, certain contractors who bid for the supply of the vehicles but felt their bid would not scale through began sponsoring media propaganda against the project and even leaked the recommendations of the body working on the proposed project.

Senator Abdullahi said the Senate had not taken any further action on the issue and was surprised that a proposed purchase had become a subject of controversy.

The Senate spokesman maintained that although Lawmakers needed vehicles to facilitate their work, the Senate would however follow due process when it chooses to take decisions on the purchase of the vehicles.

Commenting on the development on his Twitter handle, the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, said: “Not in my time will Nigeria Senate spend 50 billion Naira or 47 billion Naira or 4.7 billion Naira on cars for Senators”.

He further assured Nigerians that the Details of the 2016 Budget would be made available and open for public debate and scrutiny.
