Reuters: Obama to make good on Guantanamo pledge: White House chief of staff

President Barack Obama will make good on a promise to close the U.S. naval prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, his chief of staff Denis McDonough said on "Fox News Sunday."

Obama will first present a long-awaited plan to Congress about how to close the facility, and seek its approval, McDonough said in an interview. If Congress fails to act, the White House will determine what steps to take, he said.

"He feels an obligation to the next president. He will fix this so that they don't have to be confronted with the same set of challenges," McDonough said.

Obama pledged during the 2008 presidential election campaign that he would close the military prison, which housed foreign terrorism suspects after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

WNU Editor: The next U.S. president is going to be saddled with multiple wars and conflicts, economic uncertainly, and rising tensions with Russia/China/Middle East/etc. .... but the White House Chief of Staff is proud to say that the next President will not be saddled with the US naval prison in Guantanamo. Sighhh .... Guantanamo could have been closed in the first two years of President Obama's term when he had super-Democrat-majorities in both houses of Congress. It failed then as it will now for the simple reason that most Congressional representatives and Senators believe that it should not be closed. Talk about throwing a non-existent bone to the next US President .... but I guess it will appease the left-wing base of the Democrat party that at least something is being done.

Esu Manzano, 36, Adam Bailey, 33, and 24-year-old Cordel Fowler were killed when their car fell fifty feet from the Buford Spring Connector down to the lanes of I-75 below. According to Fox 5, it happened just after 3 a.m. on Saturday morning Jan. 9th on the bend below the Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta.

Authorities say their car lost control and flipped over the retaining wall and fell close to 100 feet, landing on the interstate below. There is a three foot concrete barrier alongside the edge of the road, but it wasn't enough to keep the car from going straight over the side.

The agent of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the collation centre in Yenagoa, Mr Dennis Otiotio has condemned INEC’s announcement of Governor Seriake Dickson as winner of the Bayelsa election.

Speaking ton Sunday evening during Channels Television’s programme, Politics Today, Mr Otiotio described the decision to announce the results as a disregard for the electoral process.

“The process started with an abuse of the process from the PDP to this point, even at this point, because provision 26 of the Electoral Act is very clear.

“It says that where the difference between the winner and runner up is less than total votes cancelled, the returning officer is not supposed to make a return.

He said, “In this case, the total votes cancelled is about 53, 000 votes while the difference between PDP and APC is 48,146. In this circumstance, the returning officer is not supposed to declare any winner.

“We have about 10 National Commissioners and two Resident Commissioners here with him but he has gone ahead, in flagrant disregard to Section 26 of the Electoral Act, to declare the winner.

“We have made protest of several issues; the undue discretional powers exercised by the ad-hoc staff in cancelling the areas where APC won. Secondly, the process of delivering the materials, the hijacking, the widespread violence that took place in Ekeremo, especially the Ward 12 materials that were hijacked, in Southern Ijaw, several materials were hijacked, they never arrived at their destination, and results were filled and brought here.”

Mr Otiotio, who said that he had refused to append his signature on the result, further claimed that a rerun should have been ordered in places where election was cancelled.

“What the returning officer should have done was to order for a rerun in the areas that were cancelled because they cancelled a total of 53,000 votes while the difference between PDP and APC is 48,000.

“When they said people should come and sign (you saw me), I went up, I did not sign and I told them ‘tell the board what was the total number of votes cancelled so that everybody will know’ but they refused to announce the total number of votes cancelled.

“If you are following, you will see that local government by local government, they were announcing the number of votes cancelled and when you sum them up, you will get 53,000.

“The thing was a trap from the beginning, it was designed from the beginning to fail, to rig APC out, and it was designed from the beginning to make PDP win,” he said.

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Seriake Dickson was on Sunday, January 10, 2016, declared winner of the Bayelsa State governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Mr Dickson polled 134,998 votes to emerge winner of the election while the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Timipre Sylva, scored 86,852 votes to place second.

The incumbent governor of Bayelsa state has been declared winner of the governorship election in Bayelsa state. Having won the rerun election in Southern Ijaw LG, Seriake was declared winner of the election by INEC. He pulled a total of 134,998 votes to defeat APC's Timipre Sylva who pulled 86,852 votes.

"Henry Dickson Seriake, having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected. This is signed by the returning officer dated this 10th day of January 2016," the Returning Officer said

INEC has declared Governor Seriake Dickson of the Peoples Democratic Party winner of the controversial Bayelsa State governorship election.
Dickson polled 134,998 votes, 48,146 votes more than his closest rival, former Governor, Timipre Sylva of the All Progessives Congress.
The Returning Officer of the election, Zana Akpagbu said

He said that, "Dickson Henry Seriake of PDP having satisfied the requirement of the law and secured the highest number of votes is hereby declared winner of the election."

As the search for persons involved in the arms procurement fund lingers, the SDP has absorbed its National Chairman, Mr Olu Falae, of any wrong doing.

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) made the declaration in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Abdul Isiaq, on Sunday in Kaduna State, northwest Nigeria.

The party said that the 100 million Naira that was received by Mr Falae from Mr Tony Anenih, was meant for the SDP/PDP Electoral Alliance project.

They also explained that the money was shared to all the 36 state chapters of the party in the build-up to the 2015 elections.

The party maintained that “neither the SDP nor Mr Falae was aware that the money came from the office of the former National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki, through Chief Anenih and meant for arms purchase”

The SDP stressed that “the SDP as well as many Nigerians were aware that the PDP had a fund raising event prior to the election where billions of naira was donated”.

They said that the party was also conscious of the fact that the PDP had ruled Nigeria for 16 years and expected that they capable of funding their part of the electoral alliance.

The statement emphasised that neither the SDP nor Chief Olu Falae had anything to do with the $2.1 billion arms deal scandal.

According to the statement, “SDP was approached by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Tony Anenih, for electoral alliance for the re-election of the former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.”

The statement also stated that Mr Falae, being the National Chairman of SDP, summoned the National Executive Committee of the party to a well-attended meeting to consider the PDP’s proposal of Electoral Alliance for the re-election bid of former President Jonathan since SDP did not field a presidential candidate of its own.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations has asked Republican presidential hopeful, Donald Trump, to apologise to a Muslim protester ejected from one of his rallies.

The group also mandated Mr Trump to “make a clear statement that American Muslims are welcome as fellow citizens and as participants in the nation’s political process”.

Rose Hamid's eviction from the rally in South Carolina sent a “chilling message to American Muslims” as she was removed after making a silent protest on Friday.

Mr Trump's proposed ban on Muslims entering the US had been widely condemned.

During the rally in the town of Rock Hill, Ms Hamid stood up wearing a t-shirt bearing the words: 'Salam, meaning I come in peace in Islam'.

When she stood up, the crowd around her began chanting “Trump! Trump!” as they had reportedly been instructed to do in the event of any interruption.

Ms Hamid, a 56-year-old flight attendant, was then told by a security officer that she had to leave as she was booed.

Lawmaker, Canadian Group Build Primary School In Abia

A federal legislator has partnered with the Challenge AIDS and Malaria in Africa (CHAMA) to build a six classroom block primary school in Abia State.

The representative of Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal constituency, Honourable Uko Nkole and the CHAMA team, led by Mr Olugha Ukpai paid a visit to the site of the ongoing project in Ndeaku, Ohafia to ascertain the pace of work.

The Ndeaku people over the years, have yearned for a conducive primary school for their children but got none.

Speaking on behalf of the people of Ndeaku, the traditional ruler of Nde Aku Ohafia, Eze Anaso Lekwa, commended the gesture of the lawmaker and the orginisation.

He said that they had hoped for the development for at least 40 years, shortly after the government took over schools in 1976 and demolished the only thatched shanty building they were using for learning in the 60s.

He said that the only alternative available was to walk for about seven kilometres to a neighbouring town of Okagbue Ohafia to acquire learning.

According to some residents, Chinyere Lekwa and Nwafor Ebieke, the situation had led to the community having several school dropouts who have had to consider the option of learning trades and abandoning education.

The new school being built by Hon. Uko Nkole is expected to be completed in six months with all the learning facilities in place.

The gesture by the lawmaker and CHAMA, an organisation based in Canada, is part of efforts to improve the standard of education at the rural areas.

The Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has commended the military for ensuring that the Boko Haram insurgents no longer hold any territory in Nigeria.

The Vice President spoke at a special church service on Sunday to mark the 2016 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Abuja.

He said that the Federal Government was confident that the military would not only win the war against the insurgents but would also continue to ensure the protection of Nigeria's territorial integrity.

Professor Osinbajo expressed confidence that the war against the terrorist group would be won in all ramification.

While giving his sermon at the service, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in the northeast, Bishop David Bakare, urged the government to set aside 10% of recovered funds of corrupt public officers for the families of soldiers who have paid the supreme price in the fight against insurgency.

Man Sets Himself And House On Fire Trying To Kill Bedbugs

A man has accidentally set himself and his Detroit apartment on fire while trying to kill bedbugs. The 30-year-old tenant sprayed rubbing alcohol on his couch and body at 4:30 a.m. last Sunday in a bid to eliminate the pests.

He then sat down and lit a cigarette, which he used to try to burn one of the critters. But the alcohol-soaked chair immediately caught fire.

The seat, his arm and the rest of his eighth-floor apartment at the St. Antoine Gardens complex in Midtown went up in flames. The man escaped the devastating blaze but suffered severe burns and was then rushed to an hospital.

Johanahn Larsosa, another resident at the complex, saw the man in the lobby and prayed with him at his request before emergency crews arrived. "He was melting," Larsosa told the Detroit Free Press. "I was scared. He was screaming."

The injured man was taken to hospital, and he is now recovering.

Detroit firefighters helped evacuate the complex as poisonous smoke filled up its hallways, according to Fox 2 Detroit. The blaze reportedly spread to four other homes but was later put out. Two dozen more apartments also received severe water damage.

Further reports say the blaze left multiple residents in the 120-unit building, which mainly houses people on Section 8 assistance, displaced. Others are unable to take showers or cook in their apartments, and some tenants are sleeping on cots in the community room.

Millennia Housing Management (MHM), which manages the complex, said it was restoring the four fire-hit apartments and would clean the others up as soon as possible. A city inspector ruled ten units as uninhabitable. MHM said it was also working alongside the Red Cross to find temporary housing for other displaced tenants, per WXYZ.

Residents said the complex is infested with bedbugs, and multiple complaints regarding the issue had previously been filed, per the Detroit Free Press. MHM has not commented on those allegations.
